Semi-Custom vs Custom Cabinets: Which Are Right for You?

Cabinets are one of the biggest design decisions in a kitchen or bathroom remodel- not just visually- but financially and functionally. One of the most common questions we get is, Should I choose semi-custom or custom cabinetry?

The honest answer is: it depends on your space, your budget, and how tailored you want the end result to be.

What are semi-custom cabinets?

Semi-custom cabinets are built from a manufacturer’s existing “framework” of sizes, styles, and finishes, but with some flexibility to make adjustments.

Some semi-custom lines offer more versatility than others. While many standard sizes come in 3” increments (30”, 33”, 36”), certain manufacturers allow modifications for a better fit. Some companies only offer a set number of colors, while others allow you to upgrade to custom colors for an upcharge. The less modifications and customizations, the less expensive they will be.

What are custom cabinets?

Fully custom cabinets are an exceptional fit in this kitchen remodel

Custom cabinets are built from scratch specifically for your space. Every dimension, detail, and feature is designed around your kitchen or bathroom.

Custom cabinets allow for (almost) infinite possibilities with design, size, color, and materials. Cabinetry is a highly skilled craft, and that level of expertise typically comes with a higher investment, making it the right fit for some projects, but not all.

So which is right for you?

Semi-custom is best when:

  • Your layout is relatively straightforward

  • You’re comfortable selecting from a curated range of finishes

  • Staying mindful of the budget is a priority

Custom is best when:

  • Your space has unique dimensions or architectural challenges

  • You have very specific design details in mind

  • There’s more flexibility in your cabinet investment

One common misconception is that semi-custom cabinets are lower-quality than fully custom cabinets. However, that is not always the case. At ELM, we partner with high-end manufacturers to ensure you receive quality products, regardless of the investment level.
